Attempts toward understanding the formation of magnetars
Abstract
Analyzing the Suzaku data of the supernova remnant CTB109, we estimated its age to be ~10 kyr, which is much shorter than the characteristic age of the associated magnetar, 1E 2259+586, 230 kyr. Including this particular case, the characteristic ages of magnetars were found to be generally over-estimated as compared to their true ages, and this is probably because the former are calculated without considering decay of the magnetic fields. We formulate the effect of field decay, show that it can solve the age discrepancy, and discuss its implications.
